Brooch & Earrings - Opercula Opulence - 2006

This "Opercula Opulence" brooch and earring matching set was created specifically for the 2006
Philadelphia Shell Show, where it was awarded a second-place ribbon.  The design incorporates
the distinctive brown opercula from Bleeding Tooth Nerite shells (Nerita Peloronta) and the
white opercula from Pheasant shells (Phasianella).  The operculum is more commonly known as the
"trap door" of univalves, created by and attached to the inhabiting mollusk to seal its shell for
protection against outside elements.  To maintain the integrity of this being an all-natural brooch
for competition purposes, I created it on a base of capiz shells.  For a more sturdy brooch, I also
create it on a decorative gold-plated or rhodium-plated metal base.  This set was also used as the
focal point for the jewelry exhibit I entered in the 2007 Shell Show, which was awarded a
first-place ribbon.
